Nixon is born in Yorba Linda, California. In 1968 he becomes president of the United States. January 10, 1863- In London the first underground railway service opens. January 11, 1755- Alexander Hamilton is born. He later becomes a big role in the American Revolution. January 12, 1990- Romania outlawed the Communist Party after the overthrow of Dictator Nicolae Ceauscu. January 13, 1893- The British Independent Labor Party was founded. January 14, 1741- Benedict Arnold is born in Norwich, Connecticut. He was an America Revolutionary War hero, but then became a traitor.
December 24, 1990- The bells of Saint Basil's Cathedral rang on Christmas Eve for the first time since the death of Lenin. December 25, 1926- Hirohito became emperor of Japan only to later become the longest reigning emperor. December 26, 1893- Mao Tse-Tung is born in Hunan Province, China. He grew up to become a Chinese librarian, teacher, communist revolutionary, and became considered the "founding father" of the People's Republic of China. December 27, 1927-Josef Stalin consolidated his power in Soviet Russia by expelling his rival Leon Trotsky from the Soviet Communist Party. December 28, 1832- John C. Calhoun became the first vice president to resign from office. December 29, 1170- Under the orders of England's King Henry II, four knights murder Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. December 30, 1947-King Michael of Romania was forced to resign after the Communists seized power. December 31, 1781-The first bank in the U.S., the Bank of North America, got its charter from the Confederation Congress. It opened on January 7, 1782, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. |
