January 3, 1924- Howard Carter, the British Egyptologist, discovers the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun after several years of searching. January 18, 1966- Robert Clifton Weaver became the first African American to be sworn into the U.S. cabinet. February- February is Chocolate Lovers Month! Time to break out the Chocolate fudge! February 15, 1564- Galileo Galilei, who later became an astronomer and physician, was born in Pisa, Italy. He was the first astronomer to use a telescope, and in addition advanced the theory that the sun, not the earth, was the center of the solar system. March 1, 1872- Yellowstone becomes the very first national park ever in the U.S. March 24, 1989- 11 million gallons of oil create one of the biggest oil spills the U.S. history. The spill happens out of the Exxon Valdez oil tanker off the coast of Alaska, covering a radius of 45 miles destroying immense amounts of wildlife. April 6, 1896- After a hiatus of 1500 years, the first modern day Olympics were held in Athens, Greece. April 15, 1817- The very first American school for the deaf was founded by Thomas H. Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc, residing in Hartford, Connecticut. May 14, 1796- Dr. Edward Jenner, a physician in rural England, developed the smallpox vaccine allowing the death rate of smallpox to drop by 2/3. May 22, 1859- The famous character Sherlock Holmes, created by Arthur Conan Doyle, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. June 5, 1968- Robert F. Kennedy gets shot while leaving Hotel Ambassador in Los Angeles. The shot ended up killing him early the next morning. June 2, 1924- The U.S. grants citizenship to all American Indians. July 14, 1881- The famous Billy the Kid gets shot by Sheriff Pat Garrett in New Mexico. July 23, 1952- Egyptian officers launch a revolution which leads to Egypt going from a monarchy to a republic. August Holiday- Admit you're happy month. SO ADMIT IT!:) August 16, 1977- Elvis Presley is announced dead at 3:30 p.m. at the Memphis Baptist Church. September 2, 31 b.c.- August Caesar leads the Roman legions to defeat Mark Anthony’s naval force at Actium. (Look at map) September 4, 1609- The Manhattan Island is discovered by Henry Hudson. October 7, 1765- The Stamp Act of Congress comes together in New York, with a representative of each colony to oppose the Stamp Act. October 12, 1492- Christopher Columbus finally lands in the Bahamas after a 33-day voyage. November 12, 1867- Mount Vesuvius goes through a several month eruption in Italy. November 30, 1874- Winston Churchill was born in Oxfordshire, England to later become England’s Prime Minister. December 2, 1804- In Paris, Napoleon Bonaparte is crowned Emperor of France by Pope Pius VII. December 5, 1901- Walt Disney is born in Chicago, Illinois to later become a worldwide icon.
