Catching Fire, a sequel to The Hunger Games, is a continuing novel about a futuristic America called Panem. It follows a young girl named Katniss, whom was forced to go into a game where her and 23 other children had to fight to the death in an arena while the rest of the country watched. After winning the games, Katniss and her district partner, Peeta, are labeled Victors, and granted luxuries from the Capitol, the center 'government' of Panem. The novel focusses on Katniss and Peeta's lives after the games, and also more stress, anger, and rebellion from them as well as the rest of the districts. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was released in theaters on November 22nd, 2013. As a major Hunger Games fan, you can imagine the excitement running through the air when I went to see it. Overall, I was very pleased with the movie. Almost all the important details were kept true to the novel, with an exception of a few minor scenes in which I would have enjoy watching on the big screen. The new actors portrayed the characters beautifully. My only complaint was that the movie went a little too fast for my liking. I feel like if I hadn't read the books, I would be very confused with what was happening in the movie. Sometimes it felt like they were rushing the events to speed the movie up, and again, that fact made it a little confusing for a fan who hadn't read the books. I also think that a lot of the events weren't explained enough, again, making the movie more confusing than it needed to be. Overall, I immensely enjoyed watching my favorite book in The Hunger Games trilogy be brought to life, and thought it was a great film. Go see Catching Fire and join the rebellion. The New York Times bestseller, The Fault In Our Stars, was announced to become a movie in mid July. Shailene Woodley was cast as Hazel Grace, a 17 year old with lung cancer. Ansel Elgort was cast as Augustus Waters, an inspirational teenager who abruptly shows up in Hazel's life and alters her future forever. On August 26th, 2013, filming for The Fault in Our Stars began in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The author of the novel, John Green, kept fans posted on his tumblr and his youtube channel. John has expressed many enthusiastic comments about the movie and has announced that he will be playing a minor role in the film. There are many set photos taken by the cast and crew of the film that have been posted on various social networks. Fans, like me, have been raving and excitedly awaiting the arrival of the film to theaters. Pick up a copy of The Fault in Our Stars, ball your eyes out, and come join the Nerdfighteria (a common name used to describe the group of fans dedicated to John Green and his various novels). The film has been set to come to theaters near you on June 6th of 2014. Until then, DFTBA. “Anybody remotely interesting is mad in some way.” The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor” is fast approaching - it’s creeping up on us and before we know it, we’ll be crying on the floor because, let’s be real, it’s Doctor Who. For those of you who don't know, Doctor Who is a British sci-fi show that's been on for - you guessed it - 50 whole years! (it technically hasn't been 50 consecutive years, but 50 years nonetheless.) It's about a 900-year-old alien that travels around time and space in his spaceship with friends that he makes a long the way. If you haven't already watched it, do that. Right now. The 50th (that’s what all the cool kids are calling it) picks up right where the seventh season left off: Clara follows the Great Intelligence into the Doctor’s timeline, making echoes of herself all throughout the Doctor’s life - two of which he met earlier in the season in “The Snowmen” and “Asylum of the Daleks.” The episode left us with a cliffhanger that wasn’t like a normal cliffhanger because we didn’t know what was happening at all. “John Hurt as the Doctor” doesn’t hold much weight when there’s a new Doctor every few seasons, and we knew he wasn’t going to be the Doctor because there was no fuss ahead of time. BUT the fiftieth has been made a huge deal - two previous stars of the show are coming back after almost five years: Billie Piper and David Tennant are reprising thier roles as Rose Tyler and the tenth Doctor. If you've never watched Doctor Who and are, for some reason, still reading this, you probably do not understand he gravity of this situation. BILLIE PIPER AND DAVID TENNANT ARE REPRISING THEIR ROLES AS ROSE TYLER AND THE TENTH DOCTOR. THIS IS AMAZING. It's been too long without them on this show, and this is one of the first things Moffatt has done right since he has taken over as show runner in the fifth season (hopefully he doesn't mess it up like everything else on the show). For every Whovian, the fiftieth is the biggest event in the history of Doctor Who - nothing will ever be bigger or better than this; they will never be able to top this; good job Moffatt. My experience in Peru was very fabulous . I went to lots of places like La Merced, Huancayo, and Lima, Peru. When I first got to Peru, I had to stay in Lima until my sister, Nory, had come for the whole family to go to the family´s main city, Huancayo. I felt personally that Huancayo was better than Lima because Lima is more polluted and smelly than Huancayo. Like when I was on the road while I was sitting in the back seat of the car to go travel, I tried to put down the window and when I did, IT SMELLED SO BAD. A week later, I went to this place called La Merced. La Merced is a city in upper Peru. It took 5 hours from bus to go there. While I was in La Merced, I went to this fabulous jungle where it reminded me of pictures of Costa Rica. I saw lots of Monkeys and insects. Then I saw this huge waterfall and I actually went under . My family took lots of pictures and we enjoyed the experience. Later that day, we had to go in this little mini van to go back to Huancayo. During my days in Huancayo, I haven’t been doing much. I sat on my bed doing some reading and some homework. It was boring until I came back to Lima, where my 2 favorite cousins were. After 3 days in Lima, I sadly had to come back to America.
The second book of the Divergent trilogy, Insurgent, is written by Veronica Roth. This science fictional book is 525 pages. Tris Prior faces new challenges of an upcoming war, conflicts between factions, and emerging secrets. She must protect her loved ones, yet deal with her grief and guilt from the past. Tris must decide to fight with the divergent or betray them to discover the truth behind the faction’s conflicts.
I definitely loved the action of Insurgent, for it powered the book forward and created a more interesting plot. The tension between Four and his father, Marcus, emerges more excitement in the reader. Whether it’s noticing Four’s protection of Tris around Marcus or Four’s ignorant attitude towards Marcus, the reader is never unsatisfied. There are countless surprising events that were never expected, yet absolutely fit into the plot of the novel. When Four and Tris come across the factionless and discover they have been living together and planning an attack against the other factions, it is like an entire new twist in the story. Then when the reader discovers Four’s mom is the leader of the factionless and planning to start a war against the other factions, there is the curiosity of Four’s reaction and the question of his relationship with his mother. Up to that point, Four was led to believe his mother was dead, yet when discovering she is alive he is furious, yet he is willing to join the divergent with the factionless to fight against the other factions. Also, the reader observes Tris’ development as she truly becomes divergent. The reader can fully understand the growth and pain and guilt Tris must face and it adds another layer to the novel: not only is there action, but progressing growth and development. The reader is satisfied to the fullest with the relationship and romance of Four and Tris. There is definitely a growth between them from the first novel; not only is love present between them, but at times, conflict and an unknown barrier keeping secrets between the two. Tris and Four’s undying love and protection for each other progresses the story and surfaces relating emotion in the reader. Roth perfected every aspect of their relationship and the action of Insurgent. Although, this book was perfected in almost every way, I disliked the intensity of the book at some points. The action in some parts was overwhelming and long and enduring. The intensity could be confusing at some times; however, the action was detailed incredibly well and interesting to read. Roth worked very hard to make the book come alive; without being lost, this novel perfects every aspect of a futuristic world. I would recommend this book to young adults because of its intensity and war driven plot. Young adults will be able to understand and enjoy the action and development throughout the novel. Anyone younger would be confused and overwhelmed by the length of the book. I would also recommend this book to anyone who enjoys futuristic worlds because Roth develops a very interesting conflict and war between factions that could possibly present itself in the future. Also, this book would be perfect for anyone who enjoyed The Hunger Games because Insurgent and The Hunger Games are similar in that they both have interesting plots, conflicts, and surprises. The war and determination of both main characters are very similar and are perfect for any young adult looking for an exciting and addicting read. NOTE: The Lit Mag was late in publishing this; it was intended to be posted last Thursday
This Sunday something huge will happen. Something that never happened before in history will commence. Something so big, the biggest thing in the world will look lame. This is something is The Walking Dead season four premiere. If I said I was excited, that would be such a huge understatement. I have been looking forward to this ever since last April, when season three ended. It has been very traumatic to say the least and to say the most, it has been very traumatic. There are many reasons why this show is my favorite, reasons you most likely don’t want to know. Last season, we left off with some dramatic deaths and people from Woodbury left the evil Mayor and came to live with Rick, Carol, Daryl, and the rest of the group. This season will definitely be eventful, from what I can tell from the trailers. I’m so nervous and I can promise that if Daryl dies that will be the end of the show for me… Anyways, I highly recommend this show and if you’d like to watch it, the seasons are all on Netflix. Anyways, you are probably wondering what the show is even about. The show is about a zombie apocalypse that has taken over the world, pretty much. There are very few people still alive and some of those people are within this group. Together, they are all trying to survive the apocalypse and carry on with life. But, aside from that, there is also death and romance and adventure so it never seems to get boring. (By Sophie)
