I'm sure you've heard about the movie. But I prod you to read the book before you watch the movie! If you've already seen the movie then I guess it's too late, but read the book anyway! The Perks of Being a Wallflower takes place in the early 90's. Its main focus is a young boy (15 years old) named Charlie. We follow him through his loss of innocence and watch him become more understanding, adult-like young man. Charlie isn't your average teenager. His best friend committed suicide right before he started high school, leaving Charlie to find new friends by himself. Luckily, he finds the older, but loyal stepsiblings, Sam and Patrick. Sam and Patrick are seniors while Charlie is only in 9th grade, but they still get along like old friends. When you first meet Charlie, he appears to be a reserved boy who enjoys nothing but reading, but as the story progresses, you find that Charlie doesn't hold this innocent trait for long. Even though he does still act and talk like he first started out talking in the beginning of the book, he commits to new things that aren't always a good idea, but that's part of growing up! At some parts I was somewhat disappointed. I fell in love with Charlie's perfect little personality right from the start, but when he began taking new interests (which I just briefly told you about) I began to lose faith in him. It's not that I don't like him anymore, I do! But it was just like when you're watching a horror movie and the woman is about to walk into the basement and you scream "DON'T GO IN THERE!" and then she goes into the basement, yeah it's that sort of feeling I had with Charlie at some points. But then I realized that part of growing up is confessing wrong doings, getting your heart broken, breaking someone's heart, and most of all, learning from mistakes. Overall, this book was FANTASTIC! I loved following Charlie through his first year of high school. I loved meeting his new friends, his family, hearing his intricate thoughts, and being a loyal friend to him. Also what I loved about this book was that the author begins and ends a subject with 'Dear Friend,' and 'Love always, Charlie'. It made me feel like I was living the book with Charlie. Phenomenal book Stephen! Great job! Everyone! Read this book!!! -Emily
