It all started when the third stone came skipping back. Mary and Mark were normal twins; they fought every day and were pretty normal, but not totally. “I bet I’ll win,” said Mark with confidence. “NO, I WILL!” exclaimed Mary. “Fine! Let’s go down to the lake and have a skipping contest.” It was the game Mary and Mark played to end an argument. Mark’s two stones were five, but Mary’s were only two. “Ha, I win!” exclaimed Mark. “No, it was best out of three,” Mary said sharply. “Fine,” Mark replied briskly. Then the unthinkable happened: the third stone came back! Mary and Mark watched the stone flop in front of their feet. They looked at each other, turned, and ran. When the twins got home they didn’t tell anybody because they heard about Emma and Evan who disappeared at that lake, and they were told not to go or talk about the lake. The next day Mary and Mark were going to the pool, so they put on their matching bathing suits and started to bike.
“Are you thinking what I'm thinking?” asked Mark. “That those hot pink bottoms do not go well with your eye color?” scoffed Mary. “No, that we should go check out the lake, and we are nothing alike.” Mark said. “ WHAT?! WE WERE TOLD NOT TO GO IN THE FIRST PLACE; WE CAN’T GO BACK!” Mary argued. “Come on, don’t be a chicken.” Mark teased. “Fine, but if we get in trouble, I’m blaming you,” Mary said not thinking about what happened to Emma and Evan. Mary and Mark went as far as they could stand. “See, there’s nothing here, now can we go back?” Mary whined. “ No wait- did you hear that? It sounded like people talking!” Mark exclaimed. “Can’t we go a little further?” “No, mom is going to get mad.” Mary said annoyed. “Please?” Mark asked with a puppy dog face. “ Fine,” caved Mary. Mary and Mark went further until they got scared. “Let’s go back now,” begged Mary, terrified. The twins both looked back but saw only more water. “Where are we?” asked Mary, “it was your idea to come farther.” “Uh, I don’t know,” admitted Mark. Then another unthinkable happened Mary and Mark saw Evan and Emma who had died (or so they say). They also saw Daniel and Danielle with Olivia and Oliver who disappeared with Sean and Sarah. Mary and Mark saw the blue water twinkling in each other’s eyes. “Mary, now I’m really scared!” Mark shouted. “So am I! I have no clue where we are, and I am seeing people that haven’t seen in more than three months!” Mary panicked. “Oh, you're the new stone catchers,” Evan said. “What?” exclaimed the twins. “You don’t know about us?” questioned Mark. “We are the Stone catchers, any time a pair of twins come to have a contest at this lake you have to throw the third stone back. The next day when they come back you have to pull up the two way mirror then close the mirror right after they swim in.” Evan was happy to announce the job of the stone catchers. Mark just responded The next day twins came by the lake to have a contest. “Evan, what about these two?” Mark asked. “Oh, no, we only do boy and girl no two boys or two girls.” Evan explained. “Okay, next time.” said Mary. A couple days later Mary and Mark’s parents were getting very scared. They called everyone they know they put posters up and called the police. They were TERRIFIED! Mary and Mark saw Timmy and Tally fighting. They came to the lake and were having a contest and started to skip stones. Mark threw the stone back as he was told to. “What was that?” asked Tally, nervously, turning to face her twin. They started to run as fast as they could. They also were never seen again. Some say Timmy and Tally were so scared they never stopped running but somehow they ended up as the stone catchers.
