April 27, 1865- On the Mississippi River, the Sultana steam ship exploded and killed nearly 2,000 passengers. April 28, 1945- The Fascists rule of 23 years ended abruptly in Italy as the former dictator, Benito Mussolini, was shot. April 29, 1992- The jury in Los Angeles failed to arrest police officers that beat an African American man causing an eruption of riots. April 30, 1948- Palestinian Jews established their independence of Britain creating the new state of Israel. May 1, 1707- England and Scotland join becoming Great Britain. May 2, 1885- The "Good Housekeeping" magazine gets published. May 3, 1898- Golda Meir was born in Kiev, Russia, and she later became one of the founders of the modern state of Israel.
