February 7, 1795- The 11th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which limited the power of the Federal Judiciary over the states, was ratified. February 8, 1928- The first transatlantic TV image received at Hartsdale, New York. February 9, 1870- The United State's Weather Bureau gets established. February 10, 1970-An avalanche plows into a ski resort in Val d'Isere, France, and kills 42 people. February 11- There is a celebration in Japan for its founding day, which occurred when the first Emperor of Japan, Jimmu, got the throne in 660 BC. February 12, 1809- Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the US, is born in Hardin County, Kentucky. January 30, 1948- Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by a religious fanatic in New Delhi, India. January 31, 1919- Jackie Robinson is born in Cairo, Georgia and goes on to become the first African American to play professional baseball. February 1, 1960- In Greensboro, North Carolina, four African American students sat down at a lunch counter and even though denied service, they stayed. This protest became known as a sit-in, which lead to the arrest of about 1,600 people. February 2, 1882- Irish novelist and poet James Joyce, who wrote Ulysses, was born in Dublin, Ireland. February 3, 1865- An unsuccessful four hour peace meeting was held between Abraham Lincoln and the Confederates vice president Alexander Stephens at Hampton Roads, Virginia which ended up continuing the American Civil War. February 4, 1985- Twenty countries in the United Nations signed a treaty called, "Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment". February 5, 1917- The new Mexican constitution was adopted which allowed for a sweeping social changes. January 22, 1901- Queen Victoria of England died after being in power for 64 years, which was the longest reign in England's history. January 23, 1937- In Moscow 17 leading Communists went on trial after being accused of participating in a plan created by Leon Trotsky. January 24, 41 A.D.- Roman Emperor Caligula, who was noted for his madness and cruelty, was assassinated by his own guard at the Palatine Games. January 25, 1947- Al Capone, a famous gangster in Chicago, died in Miami from syphilis. January 26, 1996- After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Romania became the first former Cold War enemy to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). January 27, 1967- Three American Astronauts died as a fire erupted in Apollo 1 during a launch simulation test in Cape Kennedy, Florida. January 28, 1935- Iceland became the first country to legalize abortion. January 29, 1891- Hawaii declared Liliuokalani , who was renowned for her song Aloha Oe, as it's queen. |
