December 29, 1989- Playwright and human rights activist Vaclav Havel was sworn in as President of Czechoslovakia. December 30, 1903- In Chicago, a fire in the Iroquois Theater killed 588 people, eventually resulting in new fire safety codes for theaters. December 31, 1971- Austrian Kurt Waldheim became new Secretary- General for the UN following the retirement of U Thant, serving until 1981 when he resumed his career in Austrian politics. January 1, 1801- Ireland was added to Great Britain through an Act of Union, creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. January 2, 1960- In Washington D.C., senator John F. Kennedy announces his intention to become the Democratic presidential nomination. January 3, 1946- During WWII, an Englishman known as "Lord Haw Haw" (William Joyce) was hung in London for treason after broadcasting Nazi propaganda via radio from Germany to Britain during the war. January 4, 1790- President George Washington delivered his first State of Union Address.
