January 30, 1948- Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by a religious fanatic in New Delhi, India. January 31, 1919- Jackie Robinson is born in Cairo, Georgia and goes on to become the first African American to play professional baseball. February 1, 1960- In Greensboro, North Carolina, four African American students sat down at a lunch counter and even though denied service, they stayed. This protest became known as a sit-in, which lead to the arrest of about 1,600 people. February 2, 1882- Irish novelist and poet James Joyce, who wrote Ulysses, was born in Dublin, Ireland. February 3, 1865- An unsuccessful four hour peace meeting was held between Abraham Lincoln and the Confederates vice president Alexander Stephens at Hampton Roads, Virginia which ended up continuing the American Civil War. February 4, 1985- Twenty countries in the United Nations signed a treaty called, "Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment". February 5, 1917- The new Mexican constitution was adopted which allowed for a sweeping social changes.
