January 5, 1938- King Juan Carlos I of Spain was born in Rome and was chosen by Francisco Franco to inherit his right-wing dictatorship, getting sworn in as KIng on November 22, 1975. January 6, 1990- Poland's Communist Party disbanded and reorganized as the Social Democratic Party. January 7, 1714- A patent was issued of the first typewriter by British inventor Henry Mill. January 8, 1964- President Lyndon Johnson declared War on Poverty during his State of Union message before Congress. January 9, 1960- As the first blast of dynamite exploded, construction began on the Aswan High Dam across the Nile River in Southern Egypt. January 10, 1912- The flying boat airplane, invented by Glenn Curtiss, made its first flight from Hammondsport, New York. January 11, 1964- The US Surgeon General made the first official government report declaring cigarettes may be hazardous to a persons health.
